Is GWonMac Safe? Will I Get Banned?
What we asked ArenaNet, what they told us, what the app actually does, and what that means for your account.

The short answer
Nobody outside ArenaNet can guarantee your account, and this page will not pretend otherwise. What we can do is show you everything we know, with dates, so you can decide for yourself.
In late July 2026 an ArenaNet staff member looked at GWonMac, ran it on their own Apple Silicon Mac, and told us they are fine with what the project does as things stand. That is not an endorsement and not a policy. It is the clearest signal we have, and we asked for it before launching rather than after.
What we asked ArenaNet, and what they said
We contacted ArenaNet before announcing the beta, identified the project by name, and pointed them at the source code and this website. We asked two direct questions: whether using the official WebAssembly client through a Mac host is permitted, and whether users are at risk.
What we were told, in late July 2026:
- A staff member reviewed the project, installed GWonMac on their own M4 MacBook Air, and said that as things stand they are fine with what it does.
- ArenaNet has not finalised its own plans in this area, so no formal policy covering hosts like this one exists yet. If ArenaNet ships an official solution, its view may change.
- On enforcement, we were told informally that ArenaNet typically warns people before taking action. This was explicitly flagged as neither legal nor customer-service advice.
- We asked ArenaNet to contact us before taking any action against users, and committed to deprecating the project immediately if they do.
These were informal conversations with individuals, not a statement from ArenaNet as a company. We are not publishing names or screenshots of those conversations.
What that means, and what it doesn't
What it means
- The project is known to ArenaNet, by name, with the source in front of them. Nothing about it is hidden, so their position is an informed one.
- We are not operating in the dark and hoping nobody notices.
What it does not mean
- It is not an endorsement, a partnership, or approval of any kind.
- It is not a policy, and it is not permanent.
- It is not a promise about your account. If ArenaNet changes its mind, that decision is theirs.
Why we think the risk is low, independent of that
- GWonMac downloads and verifies ArenaNet's official WebAssembly client — the same client ArenaNet ships for Guild Wars Reforged on mobile — and preserves that download unchanged as the canonical fallback. A separate hash-verified copy runs only after the exact build passes GWonMac's bounded compatibility proof; live Tools additionally require shipped exact-build facts. No emulated Windows client is involved.
- Game files are downloaded directly from ArenaNet and verified before use. The app bundles and redistributes nothing.
- It does not inject native code or modify game traffic. Player-enabled Tools use exact-build, bounded observations and explicit PvE configuration commands; the cursor repair may replay one bounded hit-test after a trusted click. Nothing chooses targets, moves, uses skills, chats, farms, or acts autonomously.
- The Mac app sends no project telemetry and has no GWonMac account or data server. Required login and game traffic goes only to the selected provider and ArenaNet services. Optional saved login stores credentials in this Mac's device-only Data Protection Keychain.
- The source is public under GPL-3.0. Anyone can read exactly what it does, and several people have.
- We work with ArenaNet rather than around it: our bug reports and interface proposals for the WebAssembly client are published openly, not kept as private workarounds.
For context, ArenaNet's published add-on stance has historically targeted automation and unfair advantage. In May 2024 it explicitly permitted GWToolbox++ for PvE while reserving the right to change that determination. GWonMac is different in kind: it hosts ArenaNet's verified web client and restricts optional integration to reviewed exact-build transformations, bounded observations, and explicit player actions. The same principle still applies: ArenaNet's discretion is final.
Is it a virus? How does macOS verify it?
Releases are signed with an Apple Developer ID, use Apple's hardened runtime, and are notarized and stapled before publication. macOS verifies every release through Gatekeeper when you open it. You never need to disable security settings. If a guide tells you to, you are not looking at an official release.
What happens if ArenaNet changes its mind
- If ArenaNet tells us this is not permitted, GWonMac is deprecated immediately. We stop distributing it and say so here, in the app, on Discord, and on Reddit, on the same day.
- We will not quietly keep shipping while the situation is unclear.
- ArenaNet has indicated it typically warns players before acting, though that is an informal remark and not a commitment we can hold them to.
About GWonMac Tools
Everything above describes the host app. GWonMac Tools Beta is a separate, opt-in boundary: its team Apply is user-initiated, limited to positively identified PvE outposts, and confirms each configuration change. Optional UI, observers, and commands are disabled in PvP, guild halls, and unknown regions; Core remains available and gameplay is never blocked. There is no unattended play, economy automation, generic command console, or competitive automation.
If you are not comfortable with this
That is a completely reasonable position, and the alternatives are real: ArenaNet's official Windows client under Parallels, VMware Fusion, or CrossOver, or Guild Wars Reforged on iPhone and iPad. We would rather you play in a way you feel good about than talk you into anything.
