GWonMac is out of beta

GWonMac is now a signed and notarized Mac app with automatic updates, Steam login, secure Keychain storage, and a redesigned launcher.

GWonMac is officially out of beta. 🎉

A few weeks ago, I only wanted to introduce my girlfriend to one of my favorite childhood games. The problem was that playing Guild Wars on a Mac was still far more complicated than it should be.

That frustration eventually became GWonMac. Today, it is a Mac app that I can confidently recommend to other players.

Thank you to everyone who tested the early builds, reported problems from hardware I do not own, and suggested improvements I would never have found by myself. Almost every fix in this release began with somebody taking a few minutes to write a useful bug report.

Guild Wars on Apple Silicon

GWonMac runs ArenaNet's official Guild Wars WebAssembly client in a dedicated macOS application. It does not bundle the game: the client and game data are downloaded directly from ArenaNet, and you sign in with your own Guild Wars account.

There is no Windows installation, virtual machine, Wine configuration, or browser tab to maintain. Download the app, drag it into Applications, sign in, and play.

GWonMac is free and open source.

What changed since the beta?

The release version includes:

  • Apple notarization, without Gatekeeper workarounds
  • Automatic updates
  • Steam login for linked Guild Wars accounts
  • Secure credential storage in the macOS Keychain
  • A redesigned launcher and website
  • Better keyboard, mouse, camera, and cursor behavior
  • Better diagnostics when something goes wrong

Existing installations from 2026.7.0-beta.2 onward can update automatically. If you have an older build, download the latest DMG and replace the app in your Applications folder.

ArenaNet and project safety

This is still the question I receive most often.

I have been in contact with ArenaNet. A staff member told me that, as things stand today, they are fine with what GWonMac is doing. He also tested it on an M4 MacBook Air.

That is reassuring, but it is not a formal endorsement or a permanent guarantee. If ArenaNet raises concerns or releases its own desktop client, I will respond openly and let users know.

GWonMac does not redistribute the Guild Wars client. It also does not provide bots, macros, autonomous gameplay, or a Windows plugin system.

What about gwnative?

gwnative is another project exploring Guild Wars on macOS. I am already in contact with its creator, and I genuinely hope it succeeds.

The projects take different approaches. GWonMac currently focuses on a polished standalone app and support across Apple Silicon Macs, while gwnative is exploring an architecture that may align particularly well with future versions of macOS.

I do not see that as a competition. Sharing research and fixes gives Mac players a better future, regardless of which architecture eventually proves best.

What comes next?

The original goal has been achieved: I can finally play Guild Wars properly on my Mac instead of debugging it every evening.

Development will slow down, but maintenance will continue. I will keep fixing bugs, supporting future Guild Wars updates, and adding carefully bounded quality-of-life improvements.

Thank you to Marc Henderkes (dub_le), Jon (3vcloud), and everyone behind gw_in_browser and gwdevhub. Their research made this project possible.

And thank you to everyone on Discord who tested builds, shared diagnostics, and helped turn a personal experiment into something other Mac players can use every day.
